TAX EXEMPT BOND
A bond whose interest is exempt from Federal income tax. Municipal Bonds are frequently called Tax Exempt Bonds. Tax exempts trade at lower yields than taxable bonds because of the tax benefit of the exemption. Some Municipal Bonds are not exempt from state taxes, and the rules vary from state to state. Territorial bonds (Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam) are presently exempt from all Federal, state and local taxation.
